The USA took on the 1996 world champions in Match 20 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022. Earlier in the tournament, USA tied their first match against Wales while the Brits defeated Iran 6-2 in their opening game.
Captain Harry Kane and Stones of England frequently attempt goals in the first half as they attempt to dominate the Americans. England is awarded a corner as Zimmerman of the USA blocks Kane’s strong attempt toward the goal. Up to this point, the first half had swung back and forth between the two sides. In the 17th minute, Wright’s header just misses the English goal to mark the USA’s first meaningful shot at the goal. In the 26th minute, Weston McKennie attempts to score against the British but just misses with his shot.
Surprisingly, the USA has taken control of the game’s ball possession and goal attempts, actively pursuing the game’s first score. Dest attempts a shot on goal for the USA 41 minutes into the first half, but it deflects out for a corner. Dest takes the corner and curls it into the English box as Pulisic heads the ball wide. The pressure from the Americans is definitely felt by Team England. In the additional two minutes of stoppage time, England makes a few moves. Saka tries, but his attempt misses as the shot flies over the bar. Matt Turner stops Mount’s low-driven shot as the referee signals the end of the first half. Mount also attempts a shot. The final score was 0-0.
USA seized control of the second half and sprinted forward, with Pulisic cutting in to pass to Wright from the left, who then attempted a shot that was blocked. Mckennie shoots from long range and misses the bar after getting the rebound. A significant scare for the British team, which has been battling to take control of the game. The defensive lineup played outstandingly to surround and stop the threatening Harry Kane when he attempted to break free, winning corner after corner for the USA.
The story remains the same despite a few back-to-back substitutions made by both teams to rest their key players: the Americans struggle to keep up with England’s pace as the game enters the fifth and final overtime period. Harry Kane makes the lone chance, sending a header just wide of the American goal. When the referee blew the final whistle, there were no goals scored in the game.
In this encounter, the young American team unquestionably outperformed England. However, multiple scoring chances were lost due to poor shot finishing. One would have anticipated them to have a four or five goal advantage based on the way they were playing. England was sloppy with the ball and found it difficult to control the brash Americans. A victory would have guaranteed them a spot in the knockout round.
