Australia won its first World Cup game in 12 years against Tunisia in match 21 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Al Janoub Stadium, moving them up to second place in Group D behind the reigning champions France. Mitchell Duke, an Australian striker, scored the game-winning goal midway through the first half with a brilliantly timed header to give Australia the lead and ultimately the victory.
The Australians adopted an aggressive strategy at the start of the game in an effort to put early pressure on the Tunisians. Australia’s team launches many attacks from the left plank throughout the course of the opening several minutes, but none of them are successful. However, they have been steadfast in their strategy throughout the first half of the game. It takes Tunisia about 20 minutes to make their first decent goal effort, but they are unable to convert following an excellent cross into the area.
The opening goal of the game is scored by Australia in the 23rd minute as Mitchell Duke heads a stunning strike past goaltender Aymen Dahmen. Duke used the ball’s speed to deflect an exquisite cross into the far post, resulting in the goal. Australia gains a crucial 1-0 lead. Around 41 minutes into the first half, a through ball into the box enables McGree to slide in and make contact, but Talbi blocks his path to clear the ball. A minute later, Tunisia had a great scoring chance when Drager received the ball inside the box. He attempts to take the shot, but the Australian defenders block him and make a superb save.
Another shoddy defensive effort from Tunisians follows a minute later when they fail to clear the ball after it bounces inside their box. Karacic (Australia) rushed in to try to score, but his shot went the wrong way due to poor execution. The Australians are able to get a corner in the final five minutes of regulation time, but the Tunisian defenders are able to score on it. Youssef Msakni found his way through and attempted to curl the ball past the keeper with no defenders in the area in the closing minute of the half for Tunisia, but the shot narrowly missed the post. The first half ends with the Australians winning 1-0 as the referee blows his whistle.
As the second half gets underway, Tunisia instantly shifts into attack mode, controlling ball possession and earning two corners and a free kick in the first few minutes. The second half has off to a promising start thus far. The Australians have a few opportunities to extend their lead as well. Goodwin collected the ball and sent a low cross through the goalpost while a teammate attempted to push the ball into the goal but was unable to make touch.
Both teams are engaged in a back-and-forth struggle, with Australia maintaining the lead and playing it safe while Tunisia tries valiantly to score an equaliser only when there is a chance. This continues throughout the second half, but it all comes to a stop when the referee blows his whistle to signal the end of the game after 7 minutes of overtime. Australia succeeds in securing a crucial victory to raise their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds.
