Bruno Fernandes scored twice to help Portugal advance to the Round of 16 in Match 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 against the former two-time world champions Uruguay at the Lusail Stadium. Uruguay lost 2-0.

As soon as the referee blows the whistle to start the game, both teams compete for possession of the ball in an effort to establish early goal opportunities. In the first half, Portugal launched a barrage of assaults on the Uruguayan goal. A poor challenge by Vecino on Mendes results in Portugal receiving a free kick well outside the area 18 minutes into the first half. Captain Ronaldo grabs a corner but throws it against the wall. At the 24-minute mark, Ronaldo sends in a cross that Rodrigo Fernandes receives and crosses for Andre Silva at the near post. The latter, though, is unable to connect to it cleanly, ruining a potential scoring opportunity for Portugal.

At the 30-minute mark, Mathias Olivera attempts to give Uruguay a chance by sending a cross into the Portuguese box, but he is unable to find a teammate to direct it in. A few minutes later, Rodrigo Bentancur is pushed through by Matias Vecino in the center circle. He rushes through the middle and cleverly dribbles past three Portuguese defenders on the edge of the box. He attempts a brave shot at the Portuguese goal but instead fires right at Costa. Striker Bentancur makes a last-ditch effort to tie the score in the first half, but his shot is straight at the Portuguese goalkeeper and he wastes a great opportunity. Midway through the game, neither team has scored.

Both sides start to compete for an early lead as the second half begins. Bruno Fernandes scored Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay after 55 minutes of play to take the lead. Bruno crosses the ball from the left edge of the Uruguayan box over Ronaldo, who jumps over two defenders, but he is unable to make contact as it rushes past the goalkeeper and into the net!

After 82 minutes of play, Portugal makes three significant substitutions: Ruben Dias Ramos replaces Ronaldo, and Nunes takes Felix’s place. Carvalho moves aside to make room for Palhinha. Ramos continues to argue that Gimenez may have committed a handball 89 minutes into the game, and the referee shows him a yellow card for his dissent. There is an additional 9 minutes. Uruguay is currently working hard to achieve its goals.

Three minutes into the third and final overtime, the referee looks for a possible handball by Gimenez, which the VAR later confirms, and awards Portugal a penalty. For the shot, Bruno Fernandes enters the scene. He performs his signature stutter before the ball, then his signature hop, before firing the ball down the left, beating the goalkeeper who dives the wrong way. Brazil has a convincing 2-0 lead over Uruguay with only a few minutes remaining in the game.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Portugal defeated Uruguay 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022. In the 54th minute, his cross for Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal the lead for the first time. Then, in extra time, he converted a penalty.
