In Match 28 of the FIFA World Cup 2022, the 2014 champions Germany faced off against 2010 champions Spain which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Al Bayt Stadium. The Germans had previously lost their opening encounter against Japan and desperately needed a win to stay alive in this tournament.
As soon as the game starts, the Germans launch an attack in an effort to generate early scoring opportunities and quickly gain the upper hand against the Spaniards. Germany appeared to have scored their first goal 39 minutes into the game when Antonio Rudiger received a free kick from Gundogan that looped into him and pushed it into the Spanish goal while completely unmarked and with plenty of room to manoeuvre. However, he barely snuck into an offside position, which was detected by VAR, immediately nullifying the goal. There were two minutes of additional time after 45 minutes, however there was no outcome because neither team scored in the first half.
The second half has started, and the Germans are attacking. At the 50-minute mark, Germany is awarded a free kick from the left, but it is thrown into the Spanish box and is out of reach for everyone. Germany’s best scoring opportunity of the game comes in the 56th minute when Gundogan passes the ball to Kimmich, who attempts to score, but Simon makes a perfectly timed dive to his right and clears the ball away. Spain’s goalkeeper keeps them in the game!
No goals have been scored by either team in more than 60 minutes of play. Alvaro Morata, a replacement, scores the much anticipated opening goal for the Spaniards a few minutes later. Olmo hands the ball to the fullback Alba, who squares it to Morata cleanly. Morata outruns Sule and slams the ball into the roof of the German goal. Spaniards have a 1-0 lead over Germany after 62 minutes.
Leroy Sane attempts to cut in from the right and passes the ball down for Musiala with two players on the Spanish goalkeeper after more than 70 minutes have passed. But the chance is lost because the Spanish defenders intervene just in time to prevent the attempt. The Germans are in full offensive gear as they launch a barrage of free kicks at the Spanish goal, with Kimmich’s kick from the edge of the Spanish box going straight into the defense wall as the closest one. The Germans receive nothing from the resulting corner either.
The Germans are in severe need of an equalizer with more than 80 minutes remaining in the match; otherwise, they risked being eliminated early. Leroy Sane’s pass was wonderfully received by replacement Niclas Fullkrug, who took it down the right flank and slammed it into the Spanish goal 83 minutes in. For the Germans to finally tie the game at one goal each, they badly needed a goal.
Leroy Sane was sprinting toward the Spanish goal with his left while Unai Simon was cautiously closing in to try and narrow the striker’s angle with the goalkeeper with six minutes of additional time remaining. Sane botches his run and execution totally as he enters the fray at the ideal moment to close down the angle. A goal at the very last second could have resulted in a Spanish loss, but Unai pulled off a superb save to prevent that. Both teams tie each other 1-1 as the game comes to a close.
Germany has now received a much-needed point thanks to this draw. They still have a chance to go to the round of 16. For that reason, they must defeat Costa Rica in their upcoming game and hope that Spain defeats Japan in their upcoming match. The outcome of these two games will determine Germany’s World Cup fate.
