Today we saw Iran take on Wales in the 17th match of FIFA 2022 at the Ar Rayyan Stadium, which saw the fighting Iranians clinch a much needed 2-0 victory. While Wales was able to draw their previous match against the USA, Iran were defeated 6-2 by England. So, in all fairness, this was a must win match for the Iranians, if they wish to have any hopes of making it to the knockout stages.
Both sides entered the game determined to go to the Round of 16. With many close tries to start the scoreboard, the Iranian men start to take control early. For the majority of the first half, they had the most ball possession possible in an effort to generate as many scoring opportunities as they could, making it abundantly clear that they had no intention of quitting the tournament so soon.
The game’s opening 10 to 20 minutes included numerous goal attempts. Ali Gholizadeh appeared to score Iran’s first goal in the 16th minute as he sprinted into the area to receive a beautiful pass and sent it into the net. Although the coach and spectators are ecstatic, a VAR review reveals that Gholizadeh was offside, hence the goal is disallowed. More nudges and fouls were committed by both teams in minutes 34 to 40 as Wales started to feel the pressure Iran was putting on them. The way his team has been playing will please the Iranian coach.
In the final five seconds of the first half, Wales’ Joe Rodon brought down Iran’s Mehdi Taremi in a desperate attempt to score, earning him a yellow card from the referee. Both teams score zero goals to end the first half. The World No. 19 (Wales) and No. 20 (Iran) teams have battled valiantly through the first half, with Iran maintaining its lead over Wales and nearly taking the lead before it was stopped by a VAR review.
Iran carried on where they left off in the second half, sustaining their dominate play and denying Wales many opportunities to possess the ball. Iran continued to generate numerous opportunities, including corner kicks, free kicks, and direct attempts on goal, but they were unable to take advantage of them. It was evident that Waled was finding it difficult to match the Iranian team’s tempo. The Iranians have dominated team Wales for more than 75 minutes.
Taremi, who was advancing toward goal, was brutally tackled by Wales goalkeeper Hennessey, who receives the game’s first red card. After a VAR review, the referee changed his initial yellow card to a red one and removed him from the game.
After 90 minutes, there were 13 minutes added, and in the 98th minute, Roozbeh Cheshmi scored a beautiful goal from 20 yards out to give his team a much-needed lead. Ramin Rezaeian sealed his team’s demise and increased the score to an unstoppable 2-0 advantage three minutes later, making the situation even worse for Wales.
