The USA had a great start to the first half, dominating the opening minutes as they kept playing in and around Iran’s penalty area inside five minutes. However, Iran was able to make a few attempts, as they were able to break through from the American shackles and kept going forward for most of the first half.

At 38 minutes into the first half, Pulisic put the USA into the lead by scoring the opening goal for his team. The opportunity came when Tyler Adams passed the ball to Weston McKennie, who crossed it to Pulisic. The striker collected the ball and made a fantastic run into the Iranian box past the defender Sergino Dest where goalie Alireza Beiranvand was waiting for the attack, having guarded the ball excellently till then. However, Pulisic was successful with his effort as he sent the ball past Dest into the nets, giving the USA a much-desired lead with the first half approaching the end.

Pulisic hurt himself while scoring as he collided with Iran’s goalkeeper and needed treatment for nearly five minutes. This is a matter of concern for the USA he had just returned after recovering from an injury in the game against England.

Just a minute later, Ahmad Noorolahi broke and tried to get the ball sent into the American box by Ali Gholizadeh. The cross was blocked excellently by Cameron Carter-Vickers, thwarting a promising Iranian attempt to level the score. 8 minutes of extra time was added to the first half which saw the USA get their second goal as Tim Weah netted the ball in for his team. However, bad luck struck the Americans as the goal was ruled as an offside. The goal was disallowed and the USA maintained their 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Iran trying to take charge and create several opportunities to fire and level the score with the Americans. However, the excellent cushioning provided by the American defense lineup did not allow the Iranians to send the ball into the goal.

Josh Sargent sustained an awkward fall after a rough tackle by Hossein Kanani in the 84th minute and had to be replaced. Sargent made quite an impact throughout the match, leading the American attack on several occasions. Kanani was issued a yellow card for his foul on Sargent. As the match carried on, Iran got a promising corner kick opportunity in the 89th minute, but that didn’t convert for the team.

11 minutes were added as extra time after 90 as Iran unleashed a flurry of attacks on the American goal, clearly desperate to level the score. Efforts by Pouraliganji and Mehdi were all thwarted as the USA did quite well to deny them the equalizer. Jalali was issued a yellow card in the 96th minute as the referee soon called for the end of the match. The USA defeated Iran 1-0 to qualify for the knockouts.

Pulisic has continued with his excellent performance in this tournament, scoring when his teams expect him to. His solitary goal gave the USA their first-ever victory over Iran, having lost their previous encounter 2-1 in Lyon. This win also became the country’s first World Cup win in 24 years. Now that the USA has qualified for the round of 16, they are set to face the Netherlands in their next match at FIFA 2022.
