It was the second match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 which saw England take on Iran. While Iran haven’t had too much of a success in the World Cup stage, England would be hoping to hit the jackpot this year after making it to the semi’s in the 2018 edition.

The odds were completely in favor of the Brit’s given their stellar line up and dated international experience that surely would give them the upper hand in this bout against a much lesser experienced yet skilled Iranian team.

With the first whistle, the Englishmen started building quick pressure on Iran with their attacking gameplay, and within the first 3 minutes of the match, they got their first corner kick opportunity. 8 minutes into the game, Maguire went for the first attempt at the goal for an unfortunate miss. A few back and forth fouls by both teams, the pressure kept building on Iran from then on and they never really seemed to get back into it.

35 minutes into the first half, the crowd roared out as Bellingham scored the first goal for England with a beautiful header into the nets. Much to the disarray of the Iranina fans, a sudden shocker followed by a corner kick by England got converted into a header past the goalie by Bukayo Saka in the 43rd minute. As the first half entered into 15 minutes of extra time, another strike by Raheem Sterling at 46 minutes took the scoreboard to 3-0 in England’s favor by the end of the first half.

As the second commenced, Iran tried to hold on to their cool by keeping as much of the ball possession to have maximum scoring opportunities to level up with the Brits, but none of them converted. 62 minutes into the match, Saka scored his second goal of the match, taking England to 4-0, a comfortable lead for the Lions!

Striker Mehdi Taremi got the Iranian supporters something to cheer about when he was finally able to get the first goal for his team in the 65th minute. The joy didn’t however last too long as substitute Marcus Rashford scored the fifth goal for England in the 71st minute which was followed by a sixth English goal by Jack Grealish in the 90th minute.

With 14 minutes of extra time added to the clock, Mehdi scored his second goal at 90+12 minutes as Iran were awarded a penalty after a foul by Foden, taking the score to 6-2. The referee soon called for the whistle, which meant that England won their first match of this world cup with a huge margin. Been handed a thrashing defeat in their first match, Iran will be looking forward to coping up from this bolt from the blue as the tournament progresses.
