The final Group H match of FIFA 2022 saw Uruguay take on Ghana, where the inaugural world champions triumphed over the African giants. De Arrascaeta scored twice for his team as the Uruguayans clinched a decisive 2-0 victory over Ghana. The striker scored the opening goal in the 26th minute to give his team an early lead in the first half. This was followed up by the second goal by Arrascaeta in the 32nd minute, allowing Uruguay to take a healthy 2-0 lead in the first half itself.
Uruguay could have had their third goal in the 57th minute if the on field referee would’ve awarded them a penalty when Ghana’s Daniel Amartey took down Darwin Nunez inside the box. German referee Daniel Siebert did not give them the penalty and even after multiple protests by the Uruguayan players to refer the VAR to turn the decision, he denied and ordered to proceed with the game, much to the dissatisfaction of the players, their manager and the fans in attendance.
This denied penalty could have been a game changer for Suarez’s boys, because had the penalty been given and converted into a goal, Uruguay would have surged past South Korea on goal difference and advanced to the last 16. However, that didn’t happen, and the match eventually ended with the scoreboard reading 2-0 in favor of Uruguay.
Regardless of the victory, Uruguay failed to make it to the knockouts and the players were fuming in anger over the potential penalty denied by Daniel Siebert. In the end of the match, the Uruguayan players got involved in a scuffle with Siebert, chasing, shoving and even verbally abusing the referee up to the tunnel, stirring a huge controversy in the process. Two of the players, Jose Maria Gimenez and Edinson Cavani were issued yellow cards for their indecent behavior during the post-match scuffle.
Despite a spirited performance by the two-time world champions, the victory could not see them through to the knockout stages, as both Uruguay and Ghana crashed out of the tournament. The post-match drama sparked a huge controversy on social media as videos of angry Uruguay players physically and verbally harassing went viral on social media channels. Four Uruguayan players, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godín, José María Giménez, and Fernando Muslera were officially charged by FIFA for their offensive behavior.
Uruguayan Captain Luis Suarez broke into tears following their World Cup exit. FIFA 2022 marked his last appearance for Uruguay on the World Cup stage, so the dramatic exit of his team broke the man’s heart. A sight that would touch the heart of every genuine football lover!
From the other half of the group, tablemates South Korea and Portugal advanced to the top 16 after their Group H encounter which saw the Koreans clinch a 2-1 win over Ronaldo’s men. At the end of the Group H fixtures, Portugal finished on top of the table, with South Korea taking the second spot, followed by Uruguay and Ghana on the third and fourth spots respectively.
