Germany, a four-time world champion, faced Costa Rica in the last Group E encounter of FIFA 2022. The outcome of the match would determine whether or not Germany would advance to the knockout rounds. Germany has only accumulated one point from their first two games going into the contest. They, therefore, needed a huge victory against Costa Rica in their third group stage match in order to advance.
Despite eventually defeating Costa 4-2 thanks to goals from Gnabry, Fullkrug, and a pair of goals from Havertz in the 10th and 85th minutes, the 2014 world champions once again crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage.
Serge Gnabry’s early header into the Costa Rican goal in the 10th minute appeared to put Germany on the road to a certain and much-needed victory. Germany started out really well and controlled the majority of the first half. The team did well to hold onto this advantage and finish the first half with a 1-0 advantage.
Yeltsin Tejeda scored the game’s first goal for Costa Rica in the 58th minute, but the visitors unexpectedly came back to tie the score in the second half. The situation worsened for Germany as they unexpectedly found themselves down 2-1 after Manuel Neuer’s accidental own goal in the 70th minute miraculously gave Costa Rica the lead in the score.
However, the Germans quickly recovered from the deficit thanks to two quick goals from Kai Havertz, who gave his team the lead. With two precise goals at the 73rd and 85th minute marks, the Chelsea forward turned the game around for Germany. The fourth German goal, scored by fellow substitute Niclas Fullkrug in the 89th minute, gave Germany a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica.
The second half was extended by 11 minutes, during which the Costa Ricans made a valiant effort to narrow the score difference. The Germans, on the other hand, did rather well to protect the score up until the last whistle, when the referee announced the conclusion of the enthralling game with a final score of 4-2. Germany beat Costa Rica with a decisive victory that they desperately needed, and they were hoping it would advance them to the next round. Their chances of moving on in this tournament, however, were dashed by a Japanese victory over the Spaniards on the opposing side, which resulted in their early departure.
Despite winning the 2014 World Cup, Germany had previously failed to advance past the group stage of the 2018 World Cup. Germany defeated Costa Rica 4-2, but they were eliminated from the World Cup group stage for the second time in a row as they finished third in Group E and lost out on goal differential to Japan, who defeated Spain in a contentious 2-1 match.
