Mexico overcame Saudi Arabia in FIFA 2022 Match 40, although they were still eliminated from the competition as Poland and Argentina advanced to the top 16. Mexico’s 2-1 victory over Team Saudi was insufficient for them to advance to the round of 16, as Poland, despite losing to Argentina in their match, just edged Mexico out on goal differential to secure second place in Group C and a spot in the top 16.
Both teams were battling for their lives in the dramatic Group C match, which Mexico won 2-1 thanks to goals from Henry Martin and Luis Chavez. As both teams made equal efforts to grab the lead in the first half of the game, the teams were evenly matched. The Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made an outstanding save on Alexis Vega’s diving header in the third minute of play. Both teams’ first halves ultimately ended scoreless, but El Tri took a 2-0 lead early in the second half thanks to two quick goals from Mexico.
Mexico launched an onslaught on the Saudi team to start the second half in an effort to score first. Following an exquisite Mexican corner kick that soared into the Saudi Arabian box in the 47th minute, Henry Martin blasted the ball into the netting. This ended up being Mexico’s opening goal of FIFA 2022. After only five minutes, Mexico is given a free kick right outside the area as Saudi Arabia is still dealing with the effects of the defeat. Luis Chavez made the decision to take the shot, and from around 30 yards away, he managed to unleash a brilliant shot past the goaltender and into the goal. Mexico leads Saudi Arabia 2-0 after 63 minutes and appears poised to score a third to clinch a place in the top 16.
At this moment, Mexico and Poland were level on goal differential, goals scored, and head-to-head points, but Poland had a superior fair play record — fewer yellow cards – than Argentina, which was defeating Poland 2-0 in a separate Group C match. Mexico simply needed to score one more goal or for Argentina to defeat Poland 3-0 in order to advance to the round of 16, as even that would have been sufficient. Argentina won their game 2-0 but Poland managed to hold their own. Due to this, Mexico was forced to score once more while also preventing Saudi Arabia from doing so. However, Salem Aldawsari scored in the 95th minute to make it 2-1, ending any hopes for Mexico to advance to the next round.
No one in Mexico was able to celebrate this victory since their side unexpectedly crashed out of the FIFA 2022 World Cup despite a valiant 2-1 victory, with Poland moving on as the Group C runners-up due to a better goal differential. This is the first time since 1978 that Mexico has been eliminated in the group stages; in each of its previous eight World Cup appearances, they have progressed from these stages.
