In Match 25 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Lusail Stadium, Argentina triumphed over a belligerent Mexico with a much-needed 2-0 victory to revive their chances of making it through to the Round of 16, after a shocking 1-2 defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia in their opening match. Captain Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez scored in the second half to see their team through till the end.
The referee blows the whistle to signal the start of play, and both sides launch into an attack. The obvious goal is to prevent the ball from ever reaching Messi, which Mexico is doing a good job of accomplishing. They succeed for about 25 minutes before suddenly Argentina starts launching a barrage of assaults against the Mexican defense. Messi and Martinez both attempt back-to-back goals in the minutes 35 to 41, and the Mexicans are suddenly under pressure.
The game goes on as scheduled for the further six minutes, with neither team able to score the game’s first goal. With no goals yet recorded on the scoreboard, the referee declares the first half to be over.
Mexico tries to control ball possession early in the second half, but their shooting accuracy is not great. After 59 minutes, Mexico has a chance to score on a left-handed free kick. Alexis Vega fires a vicious shot, but it misses.
Argentina’s captain scored the first goal for his team 65 minutes into the game with a beautiful shot. He was given plenty of room by the Mexican defense, and Ocha was unable to save his astonishing low shot as it entered the Mexican goal. Messi has now tied the record-setting Diego Maradona for most goals in a World Cup with this goal. After 75 minutes of play, Julian Alvarez sprinted down the left side and squared the ball in for Messi, but a swift Mexican defender intercepted it just in time, saving the game from a certain defeat.
Mexico has maintained the majority of ball possession in the second half, but they have been unsuccessful in scoring. Enzo Fernandez of Benfica was given the ball in the 87th minute after Messi scored a beautiful corner kick. Fernandez then took a shot that curled past Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa and into the nets. Argentina now has a two-fold advantage over its opponents and is almost guaranteed to win.
Argentina was clearly looking to waste time and accomplish nothing more in the final minutes of extra time by playing it safe. The Argentinians win easily 2-0 after 7 minutes of extra time, giving them their first victory of the tournament. Nothing goes Mexico’s way as a result.
Quick Overview:
Argentina finally gained the upper hand with a significant victory in a very tight encounter where the underdogs Mexico gave the former world champions a stiff challenge. After Mexico sat back and made it difficult for their opponents to find a way through for much of the half, Argentina finally scored thanks to Lionel Messi’s trademark screamer in the second half. Argentina gained a much-needed buffer when 21-year-old Enzo Fernandez scored the second goal late in the game, and they went on to win the match.
