As the FIFA World Cup 2022 continues into day 3, the fixture brought USA and Wales face to face as they squared off in the fourth game of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Al Rayyan Stadium. Wales, meanwhile, participated in the World Cup for the first time since their debut in 1958. USA came back after skipping Russia 2018.

Both teams had about equal possession of the ball as the game started, and during the first half of play, both teams traded shots at each other’s goals until, in the 36th minute, Timothy Weah assisted Christian Pulisic to score the game’s first goal and give USA the lead in the first half. After 4 minutes of added time, the referee soon blew the whistle to end the first half. USA have a 1-0 advantage.

With quick and precise passes in the gaps, the USA continued to control the game in the second half while applying pressure to the opponents. In the 64th minute, some tense scenes developed as USA nearly scored on a superbly executed free kick by Wilson. When the ball swung into Gareth Bale, who skilfully manipulated it, causing all kinds of difficulties until Turner superbly blocked his well-aimed header by pushing the ball over the crossbar.

Soon after, the USA made three consecutive substitutions: Acosta took the place of Musah, Yedlin took the position of Dest, and Wright replaced Sargent.

Under pressure, Wales maintained composure and eventually had a chance to tie the score when captain Gareth Bale successfully converted a penalty in the 82nd minute. After 81 minutes of play, Zimmerman attempted to tackle Bales inside the USA box but instead kneed him to the ground. He receives a yellow card from the referee, and Wales is then awarded a crucial penalty.

As the game was almost at its conclusion, Gareth Bale converted a penalty kick into the top-right corner to give Wales a much-needed goal and even the score. Wales’ equaliser allowed Wales to restrict USA to a potential 1-1 draw while USA goalie Turner stretched as far as he could but could only get a fingertip on the ball.

As soon as the referee signals for 11 more minutes of play, extra time began for the game. Both teams then engaged in some high-intensity play in an effort to score the one goal that would decide the game. The closest opportunity fell to Wales in the third minute of extra time, but they were unable to score as the referee blew the full-time whistle as soon as the ball missed the goal. Wales’ valiant effort paid off just when it was needed, and they were able to avert a possible defeat at the hands of the USA.
