Match 11 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 saw the 2010 world champions Spain take on Costa Rica. The former would be hoping not to let the underdogs score a fairytale victory like we just witnessed in the previous match between Japan and Germany.
The Costa Ricans kicked off the game, but the Espanos in red soon made their domination known. A few minutes into the game, the Spanish players were just not allowing the Costa Rican players to touch the ball, and it appeared as though they owned it. Pablo Martinez Gavi, the youngest player to ever compete in a World Cup match, gracefully scoops the ball to Dani Olmo, who controls the ball deftly and scores the game’s first goal past Costa Rica’s goalkeeper.
The men in red continued to make numerous tries before scoring their second goal, which was assisted by Marco Asensio, in the 21st minute. In the 30th minute, Jordi Alba is brought down by Oscar Duarte, and the referee signals for a penalty. Spain increases its lead to 3-0 when Ferran Torres takes the shot and makes it into the goal. Spain has a sizable lead over Costa Rica after just 30 minutes thanks to goals from Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, and Ferran Torres, who have left the Costa Ricans completely in disarray. Even though the Spanish players sought to score more goals over the extra six minutes, none were scored as they finish the first half leading Costa Rica 3 goals to nil.
With more than 85{fdf37779c9dd66b1fe62c0757eeffb2930acac147787e4ebd7723eb33ec3056b} of the ball, Spain was utterly dominant in the opening period. Spain got things going and maintained their form to start the second half. With 54 minutes remaining, Gavi breaks through the Costa Rican defense to find Torres, who quickly turns and scores Spain’s fourth goal by slipping the ball past the goalie. In the second half, Costa Rica was unable to even get close to the Spanish penalty area and failed to generate a single scoring opportunity.
After providing two lovely assists, Gavi eventually scored at the 75th minute, scoring his first World Cup goal and fifth of his career with a flawless volley. He also set a record for the youngest World Cup goal scorer. We undoubtedly saw two of the fastest goals ever scored in short succession as the clock wound down the game. Carlos Soler scores Spain’s sixth goal at the 90-minute mark, and Alvaro Morata scores again at the 90+2-minute mark to make it 7-0. The referee blew the whistle at 90+9 minutes as Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0, marking their biggest ever victory in a World Cup match.
The former world champions Spain entered the match as favorites and delivered with the hopes of their fans and enthusiasts, leaving Costa Rica a lot to think about as the tournament continues.
