
The 2018 runners-up Croatia stunned the five-time world champions Brazil in the first quarterfinal of the FIFA 2022 World Cup to advance as the first team to the semifinals. Both teams have advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their elimination matches, with Brazil defeating South Korea 4-1 and Croatia defeating Japan 3-1 on penalties.
The face-off, which was probably the most anticipated game of the competition so far, began with neither team scoring in the allotted 90 minutes. Neymar scored the first goal as the game entered extra time at 106 minutes, nearly sending his team through to the semifinals, but Petkovic scored the shocking equalizer with just 3 minutes left in the match. The game eventually concluded with both sides tied at 1-1.
THE PENALTY SHOOTOUT
Despite the fact that Neymar thought he had assured the five-time champions a spot in the semifinals with an incredible extra-time goal. Bruno Petkovic, a substitute from Croatia, stunned the crowd by scoring an equalizer. The referee ultimately signaled the end of play, forcing both teams into a penalty shootout.

The mighty Croatian team defeated the guys in yellow 4-2 as Neymar waited for the fifth penalty that never came. The Croatian forwards who were fouled—Nikola Vlasic, Mislav Orsic, Lovro Majer, and captain Luka Modric—scored their respective penalties in what turned out to be an incredible match. Brazil missed the goal by two goals, though, as Croatia’s goalkeeper, Livakovic, repeated his heroics from the game against Japan by making a few pivotal saves that gave Croatia the advantage.
