Australia and Denmark squared off in the 37th FIFA 2022 encounter, which was essentially a make-or-break game for both teams. Australia needed to win the game to remain in the competition, while Denmark needed to win to advance to the top 16. Prior to the game, both teams had a lot on the line.
Denmark attempted to put some early pressure on the Australians as the game progressed, but the latter overcame to tenaciously fight back. In their final Group D match of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, Australia defeated Denmark 1-0 on a breakaway goal by Mathew Leckie to go to the Round of 16. After the half, Australia took control of the match and launched several counterattacks, eventually scoring the game-winning goal at the 60-minute mark when a through ball found Leckie in a ton of space on the left to secure a crucial victory.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Denmark did appear to have a great opportunity to tie the game when the referee gave them a penalty with 10 minutes remaining for a foul on Kasper Dolberg. To the dismay and displeasure of the players and the audience, this judgment was swiftly reversed when the approach for the foul was determined to be offside after the flag was raised. Given that Australia’s attack and defense were far too strong for the Danish squad to overcome, this appeared to be the only hopeful effort Denmark made the whole game. Rarely did they appear to be scoring.
After the allotted 90 minutes had passed, there were 6 minutes of extra time, but they didn’t really benefit Denmark in any way as the Australians stayed tight and didn’t let the Dans miss any opportunities. They only had to defend and hold onto their lead, which they accomplished flawlessly. The final few minutes did however see Denmark win a corner down the left. Eriksen walked in to take the strike as this is a crucial shot for the team, and if converted, can help them tie the Aussies as the match approaches the end. However, the effort goes in vain as the slick Australian defense guards and clears the ball away. A few minutes later, the referee blew the final whistle to give Australia a definite 1-0 victory over Denmark.
The game’s lone bright spot appeared to be Mathew Leckie’s incredible solo strike in the 60th minute. Leckie displayed excellent ball control during the buildup to the goal, deceiving and twice sending goalie Maehle the wrong way. Then, seizing the chance, he sent the game-winning goal through his legs and into the bottom right corner to give Australia a critical victory. Australia will now join France in the Round of 16 thanks to their victory.
Halfway through the competition, the excitement around the finals is increasing as some teams are eliminated and others advance to the Top 16. Simply remain tuned to H3bet for all of the most recent news and post-match updates for FIFA 2022.
